Developments Between 1961-1970

Initially, the Radiology Unit developed from Maternity Room complex at Semarang Hospital. Then became the Yohannes Pavilion at Dr. Kariadi Hospital up until now. This period was led by dr. M. Martono, a Pulmonologist / Radiologist. Medical activities done in the form of plain radiographs of the chest, abdomen and bones. Radiotherapy services with special equipment did not yet exist. During this period, the number of radiologists increased with the arrival of dr. Dradjat Nitidiningrat. He studied Angiocardiography and Neuroradiology in Canada. With the increase in radiologists, the diagnostic examination began with the usage of contrast media (in addition to plain photos) and radiotherapy service had also began using a special machine, called Cesium 137 and X-ray therapy. Specialist education began with the first resident, dr. Sundjoto. Radiology education for Faculty of Medicine students at Diponegoro University had already existed. In this final period, there was exchange in the Head of Unit, dr. M. Manono, to dr. Dradjat Nitidiningrat, because dr. M. Martono was entering retirement.

Developments Between 1971-1980

In 1972, 2 more radiologists were added, namely dr. Abubakar, who was transferred from Faculty of Medicine of Indonesia University and dr. Sundjoto, who has graduated as a specialist. Then there were added more radiologists who graduated from Diponegoro University, namely dr. Lukito Handoyo, dr. Djoko Untung Trihadi, dr. R. Oetomo and dr. Y. Suwito. At this time dr. Sundjoto deepened radiotherapy field in the Netherlands. Diagnostic examinations are more developed, namely angiography and other invasive examinations. The presence of a radiotherapist, dr. Sundjoto assisted by dr. Lukito Handoyo and the addition of radiotherapy units such as Stabilipan and Cobalt 60, had made radiotherapy services developed smoothly. In this period dr. Dradjat Nitidiningrat and dr. Sundjoto was appointed as a member of the Indonesian Radiology Examiner Council (MPARI). Radiology specialists examination was conducted nationally. And in this period the Radiology Laboratory of the Medical Faculty of Diponegoro University was designated as the place for Radiology Specialists Education.

Developments Between 1981-1990

In this period two radiologists graduated from Diponegoro University’s Faculty of Medicine was accepted as a teaching staff, namely dr. Adji Suroso and dr. FX. Hartono. Diagnostic examination is more advanced with the Gamma Camera SPECT. Examination of the kidney and thyroid with nuclear medicine is a routine examination. Now has installed a radiotherapy machine called a Linear Accelerator. The existence of these new and sophisticated tools is followed by an increase in the ability and skills of the staff who take short courses inland or abroad. Thus, education for students and residents runs more smoothly. The duration of finishing touch for prospective candidates for the radiology specialist examination of the Faculty of Medicine Diponegoro University became shorter. On the initiative of dr. Drajat Nitidiningrat, a Regional Radiology Meeting was held every 3 months, which was attended by radiologists/residents from Semarang, Yogyakarta, Solo and other cities in Central Java and Yogyakarta. In 1989 the Head of Laboratory/UPF Radiology dr. Drajat Nitidiningrat died at the age of 65. In 1990 the former staff, dr. M. Martono, passed away. Dr. Lukito Handoyo is entering retirement. With the death of dr. Drajat Nitidiningrat, the task as Head of the Laboratory is carried out by dr. Abubakar, while the head of UPF by dr. Sundjoto.

At this time Radiology Unit consisted of 4 Subdivisions:

  1. Diagnostics led by dr. Abubakar
  2. Radiotherapy led by dr. Sundjoto
  3. Nuclear Medicine led by dr. Djoko Untung Trihadi
  4. Ultrasonography led by dr. Adji Suroso

As a place of education for residents, there was a rejuvenation/replacement of the chairman and secretary of the Study Program.

In the period of 1980-1990 : the Head of Study program was led by dr. Abubakar and the secretary was led by dr. Lukito Handoyo

In the period 1990 – present : the Head of Study program was led by dr. Djoko Untung Trihadi and the secretary was led by dr. Y. Suwito.

Prospects to be developed:

  1. Addition of teaching staff in addition to improve the academic quality of the existing teaching staff.
  2. Promoting interest in research
  3. Streamlining staff promotions.
  4. Attempting to have an ultrasound device, which was not only important for patient care but also important for education for residents.

Period 1991-Present

In this period, the Radiology Department experienced a fairly rapid development, among others in the number of staff, facilities and equipment. There was addition in radiology specialists as home staff who were dr. Eko Kuntjoro, Sp. Rad (1993), dr. Nasirun Zulqarnain, Sp.Rad (1994), dr. Eddy Sudijanto, Sp.Rad (1995), dr. F. Mardiana, Sp.Rad (1998), and dr. Subandini, Sp. Rad (2000). In 1994 dr. Susatyo Pranoto, SpKN entered as an expert in Nuclear Medicine and in 1995 Ir. Vivi Vira Viridianti was accepted as a Nuclear Physics expert staff. At this time dr. Abubakar Sp. Rad has served as Head of Lab/Head of Section with Head of Study Program, dr. Djoko Untung T, Sp. Rad. Meanwhile Secretary of Study is dr. Y. Suwito, Sp. Rad. And in 1997 dr. Djoko Untung T, Sp.Rad as the Head of the Lab until now with Head of Study Program, dr. Y. Suwito and Secretary of Study Program, dr. Eddy S. In 2000 dr. Y. Suwito entered retirement period so that since 2001 the position of Head of Study Program was handed over to dr. Eddy S and Secretary of Study Program was dr. Mardiana and secretary of the Unit was dr. Nasirun. Student Education Coordinator from dr. Y. Suwito was replaced by dr. Nasirun since 1997 until now. dr. Sunjoto Sp.Rad, who entered retirement age in 1994, remains as a Radiation Oncology consultant.

Since 1995, according to the Hospital Director’s Decree regarding the organizational structure of the new hospital, UPF Radiology has been divided into:

  • Diagnostic Radio Installation (led by Dr. Adji Suroso SpRad), Radiotherapy Installation (led by Dr. Eko Kuntjoro Sp.Rad), and Nuclear Medicine Installation (led by Dr. Susatyo Pranoto SpKN).
  • Functional Medical Staff led by dr. Djoko Untung Trihadi Sp.Rad. With the increase in staff and facilities, services to patients and education for medical students and residents were getting better.

The addition of diagnostic imaging equipment was supported by assistance from the Semarang State APRO in 1993, including General Purpose Equipment, Fluoroscopy, Mammography X Ray Unit and USH (Shimadzu).

In 2000, it received a sophisticated diagnostic tool, namely Magnetic Resonance Imaging 0.5 T (Tonicon Bruker). Radiotherapy installation received additional tools that supported to increase the number and quality of radiotherapy service. In 1996 it received Co Teletherapy, (Alcyon II) Simulator, Brachytherapy (Curietron) and Treatment Planning System Unit.

In 2001 there was Brachytherapy machine with a high-power radiation source (Nucletron) which allowed the delivery of radiation in a shorter time and allowed the use of intra-cavitary radiation for cases other than cervical carcinoma such as nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Short course training related to the acquisition of new equipment, among others: dr. Adji Suroso, dr. Nasirun, and two radiographers to France for MRI training. Dr. Y. Suwito, dr. Eko Kunjoro and Ir. Vivi from technician to France and Holland for Brachyterapy training. Specialist education program accepted more students and since 1991 until now through the MPRI national exam, 43 radiology specialists have successfully passed.

Additional information for the period 1981-1990: in 1987 it received a CT Scan (Hitachi).
